The decision on when to dismiss schoolchildren on vacation in Russia is made by the educational institution itself. In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Education, the duration of vacations, their start and end dates are determined by the school. Only the total duration of study and vacation periods is regulated, allowing children to cope with the curriculum without "overloads":
- the academic year for first-graders should last at least 33 weeks, for students of other classes - at least 34;
- the period of summer rest for children is at least 8 weeks;
- short vacations within the school year must total at least 30 days, and first grade students are allowed an extra week.
Despite the given freedom of choice, most Russian educational institutions adhere to the traditional scheme that developed back in Soviet times when approving the vacation schedule: four quarters, a week of rest in November, two for the New Year holidays, another week at the end of March. Regional departments of education usually send out recommended vacation dates in advance of the start of the school year, but the final decision remains with the school administration.
Moscow is an exception. Here, vacation dates are the same and are set by the Metropolitan Department of Education for two options for the study schedule - traditional (quarter) and trimester (modular), when the year is divided into equal intervals and five weeks are followed by one vacation.
In the regions, the dates may vary slightly, but the vast majority of schools, gymnasiums and lyceums will have the same curriculum.
School year start and end dates
2017-2018 academic year traditionally starts September 1, on the Day of Knowledge. This year, the first week of school will be very short - the first day of autumn falls on the calendar on Friday, so that students will have the opportunity to smoothly move from rest to study.
The end date of the school year may be slightly shifted due to the peculiarities of the academic schedule. Primary grades will be the first to leave for the summer holidays - their school year will end May 22-24. Middle and high school students will study for a few days longer, for them the last day of school will be May 25-26. In Moscow schools that have chosen a modular mode of study, high school students will sit at their desks the longest - until the 31st.
9th and 11th grade students taking final exams will be exempted from study hassle in accordance with their exam schedule. The Unified State Examination and the OGE will begin in the last week of May and will run until the end of June.

There are several ways to find out the vacation schedule at your school.
- Go to the official website of the school. By law, all "calendar" information must be contained there. As a rule, it is located in the "Organization of the educational process" or "Schedule" section.
- Look into the child. Vacation schedules may be posted in the announcement or parent information sections. But even if this is not the case, you can try to "scroll" the magazine for the period of the proposed vacation and "calculate" the exact dates - no lessons will be scheduled for them;
- Ask your child's class teacher. The schedule is usually approved in the summer, sometimes even earlier. By the time the school “roll calls” are held, teachers usually already have this information.
- Call the reception and check the vacation dates with the secretary of the educational institution.

In this case, exactly as in the quarter system, a number of changes are not ruled out. Holidays can be shifted by a week, and sometimes, for a number of reasons, reduced for a while.
Regulation at the state level
The only body that can determine the duration of holidays, of course, is the Ministry of Education. According to the norms prescribed by the department, the shortest break between quarters is about 7 calendar days. In addition, the total duration of holidays during the academic year must be at least 1 month. All standards should be taken into account, moreover, each school, lyceum or gymnasium draws up an individual schedule, taking into account a number of aspects. Be that as it may, the management reserves the right to slightly shift the deadline, albeit contrary to the time of the holidays.
A variety of factors can interfere with learning. If we talk about Siberian schoolchildren, there are often severe frosts, so the children stay at home. Due to minimum temperatures and strong wind gusts, the Department periodically cancels classes. Much depends on the weather, and let it be blizzards in winter, and floods may turn out in spring. For a number of reasons, the Department cannot foresee such a problem, because these are circumstances that do not depend on the highest ranks.
School holidays are a time of long-awaited rest for any student. Both first-graders and future graduates count the days before the start of the holidays literally from the first days of the school year. That is, five weeks of training (sometimes six) alternate with a week of vacation. 35 days of study, then 7 days of vacation - and the cycle repeats again. The only exception is winter, more precisely, New Year's holidays. This rest time in schools with a trimester system coincides with holidays in regular schools, where education is based on the principle of quarters. Schoolchildren who communicate with peers from other cities of Russia notice that the start and end dates of vacations often do not coincide. Why it happens? One country, one specialized agency that manages the learning process is the Ministry of Education, and school holidays in 2017-2018 in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia begin at different times.
The educational process can take place in schools in different ways. Some educational institutions are engaged exactly according to the established plan, not ahead of or behind the school curriculum. Others may fall behind the curriculum due to various force majeure circumstances.

Most of the reasons for missing school are force majeure occurring due to circumstances beyond the control of the Department of Education. 
If there are only a few such "force majeure" days in a year - usually three to five, then there is an opportunity to "catch up" with the curriculum. However, when there are quite a lot of such “passes” - from a week or more, then the school administration has to take unpopular measures among schoolchildren and reduce or postpone school holidays. This force majeure is the reason why the right to set rest time is left to the school director, and not regulated by a direct order of the ministry.
Additional holidays in 2017-2018 academic year
Unforeseen holidays are a great joy for most schoolchildren, while their reasons are completely unhappy. They can appoint additional holidays or shift the planned dates for the following reasons:
- severe frosts (at -25, lessons are canceled in elementary school, at -28 in middle school, and, at -30, in high school);
- if the air temperature in the classrooms falls below +18;
- exceeding the epidemiological threshold for a particular disease.
Holidays in 2017-2018 for students
