Photo archive of Itar Tass. Nine decades of "TASS newsreel

As the main edition of photo information.

The agency was best known as TASS Photo Chronicle, since it had this name for several decades. In everyday speech, it often bore the name "Photochronicle", denoting one of the largest agencies that creates a photo chronicle of the internal life of the USSR for use in domestic publications. Photochronika TASS was the largest supplier of news photo information for Soviet print media and had an extensive network of correspondent points that made it possible to receive photographs from any corner of the Soviet Union. The second major photo agency in the country was the Photo Service of the Novosti Press Agency (APN, now RIA Novosti), which produced mainly photo information for foreign publications.

Agency history

The beginning of the history of TASS Photochronicles can be considered 1926, when a workshop was created at the ROSTA agency for the production of typographical photographs for central print publications. Over time, the workshop grew into a full-fledged photo service and turned into an independent editorial office that collected information, created photo reports and individual photographs and distributed them. During the years of the Great Patriotic War, Photochronicle reporters made the most significant contribution to the creation of a documentary chronicle of military operations. During these years, such well-known photojournalists as Yevgeny Chaldei, who removed the hoisting of the Soviet flag over the Reichstag, Emmanuil Evzerikhin, Mark Redkin, Max Alpert and others, worked on the staff of the editorial office. In addition, the agency carried out a centralized collection of photographic documents, collaborating with photographers from other publications.

In the post-war years, the agency became the country's central body for photo information, receiving the name "Main editorial office of TASS photo information under the Council of Ministers of the USSR". The editorial office was located in a building on 25th October Street, house 4, now Nikolskaya Street, and later - on Bolshaya Dorogomilovskaya House 12, in the building of a former school. For the Moscow Olympics, Photochronicle received another building in the neighborhood: on Bryanskaya Street, house 7, where it was located until recently. In the building on Bolshaya Dorogomilovskaya there were workshops for exhibition photo printing, warehouses and workshops for the repair of photographic equipment. In the mid-2000s, the agency abandoned the building on Dorogomilovskaya, and at the moment it is abandoned and uninhabited. The coverage of congresses CPSU and the official chronicle became practically a monopoly of TASS Photochronicles, which supplied photographs for all domestic and foreign publications. Particularly important state events in the regions were covered on-line with the use of photographic telegraph transmission, which was gradually equipped with all bureaus. Since February 7, 1957, the phototelegraph was used by the agency to transfer finished photographs to the largest foreign consumers of photographic information. By the end of the stagnation, the agency's main product was semi-official photo reports on party events and the achievements of the socialist economy. Central and local newspapers and magazines were obliged to publish the materials of the "Photochronicles", deductions for which brought a guaranteed income to the agency.

With the beginning of Perestroika, the ideological ban on covering many aspects of public and political life was lifted, and the agency's reporters received a much greater degree of freedom in choosing topics. In addition, there was a demand for photographs showing reality from unusual points of view, spurring the professional growth of Photochronicles. However, hard times soon came for the agency, because, despite the rapid development of print media and the opening of many new newspapers and magazines, the monopoly on their supply of photographic information was lost. The largest photo information agencies, such as Reuters (Eng. Reuters), Associated Press (Eng. Associated Press) and others with worldwide coverage of correspondent networks and advanced technical equipment, have gained access to the domestic market of Russia. The advent and development of the Internet and the methods of instant delivery of photographic images to any consumer forced Photochronicle to develop the latest methods of distribution. Thanks to a cooperation agreement with the photo service of the Reuters agency, an operational photo information feed was created in the mid-1990s, and foreign partners got access to Photochronicles photos from the regions. Since 1992, after the head agency TASS was renamed into ITAR-TASS, TASS Photo Chronicle was renamed into the ITAR-TASS Photo Agency. Currently, the agency has its own technical equipment for creating a photo news feed and is one of the five largest suppliers of photo information for Russian news publications.

Significance for domestic photojournalism

Despite the ideological nature of the activity of "Photochronicle", its professional level was maintained at a high level for many years in order to ensure the competitiveness and image of the Soviet school of journalistic photography abroad. Not only Moscow photojournalists could cooperate with the agency, but also reporters from the regions, while improving their skills. In fact, "Photochronicle" until the end of the 1990s was the country's main photo bank, working with many freelance authors in the country and abroad. The vast majority of well-known Russian photojournalists, one way or another, have ever collaborated with Photochronicle. Many current employees of foreign photo agencies, who are of Russian origin, also come from the walls of the TASS Photo Chronicle. Agency reporters have repeatedly received prizes from prestigious international photo contests, including World Press Photo, in which Photochronicle was a regular participant, along with its foreign competitors.

Well, so as not to run twice :): let me remind you that in the summer the Associated Press posted a huge collection of historical videos on YouTube ().

On July 22, 2015, an unprecedented collection of videos provided by the Associated Press in conjunction with British Movietone was uploaded to the well-known video hosting. 550,000 files and more than 1 million minutes of archived video - this is a gift the international agency has presented to YouTube users.
The video archive includes recordings of the most important historical events since 1895. Among them are the bombing of Pearl Harbor, video footage with celebrities (Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Muhammad Ali, etc.), as well as stories on a wide range of topics, including politics, sports, fashion, culture, etc.
It is reported that this unloading of historical archives is the largest in the history of video hosting. “Bringing this video content to YouTube is a great initiative by AP and British Movietone that will breathe new life into the archives and inspire users around the world: students working on history projects, cultural connoisseurs and millions more with a wide range of interests.” ," commented Stephen Nuttall, director of YouTube Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
