“The construction of the buildings is such that wooden floors, doorways and so on - if a fire happens, it will not even be possible to evacuate either children or young mothers,” Khripun is quoted by Interfax.

There are maternity hospitals in Moscow that "pose a lower risk," such as Maternity Hospital No. 18, but "they are located in places where there is still a colossal resource for obstetric care," he said.

The fate of maternity hospitals No. 10 and No. 72 is still being decided. However, according to Khripun, there are hospitals and maternity hospitals with better conditions near them. “Women can be safely moved there, and this will only make things better for everyone. The chief doctors of hospitals, which include maternity hospitals, make decisions,” he stressed.

The average bed occupancy in Moscow maternity hospitals is 74%, so the reduction in maternity hospital beds over the past five years has not had a negative impact on the number of births in Moscow, the official said. He added that over the past three years, the number of beds in maternity hospitals in Moscow has decreased by a thousand, and the number of births has increased, but "no one in Moscow noticed this."

Today there are 31 maternity hospitals in Moscow, four of which are closed for major repairs, he noted.

The schedule of the city authorities for the reorganization of the Moscow healthcare system into a network a month ago. Like RBC in September, the goal of the reform of the Moscow hospital system is to commercialize the work of medical institutions as much as possible. “There is a law that, starting from 2015, completely transfers all medicine to the CHI system,” Moscow Vice Mayor Leonid Pechatnikov, who is responsible for social development, explained to RBC.

Another reason for the cuts is the need to comply with the President's "May Decrees" to raise salaries in the healthcare sector. The city authorities intend in this way to fulfill the 597th decree, which prescribes an increase in the salaries of doctors to two average salaries in the region, a source close to the Moscow government told RBC.
